What, why and how?

This IPE activity is offered to students in health and social care professional programmes at the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin. Most students are in the third year of their degree programme.

IPE CALC is a collaborative learning activity centred around a non-communicable disease where a significant factor is smoking. Through the activity, students develop interprofessional competency in the areas of interprofessional communication, and clarification of their own health professional role and the role of others. They apply knowledge of a framework relevant to chronic health conditions and the impact these have on individuals, whānau and community.

Students are engaged over 5.5 hours. They complete preparation for the case scenario on which they will work in a facilitated session, as well as completing the online Ministry of Health Better Help for Smokers to Quit programme. In their facilitated session, students work in small interprofessional groups to formulate an interprofessional management plan for the case patient and their whānau.
