What, why and how?

On the Dunedin campus, interprofessional education (IPE) simulation options are provided to advanced- level students in Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy, with the opportunity to work as well with final-year Nursing and Occupational Therapy students from Otago Polytechnic.

IPE simulations focus on the management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Dementia or Heart Failure. Each simulation activity takes around 2 hours, including an introduction, three interprofessional clinical scenarios with a simulated patient, and facilitated debrief.

The scenarios are designed to develop students' collaborative practice skills in different settings along the continuum of care (ward, community clinic, home visit).

Who are the students?

  • Medicine Year 4 and Year 5
  • Nursing Year 3
  • Occupational Therapy Year 3
  • Pharmacy Year 4
  • Physiotherapy Year 4

Who are the facilitators?

Academic staff from:

  • University of Otago Bioethics Centre
  • Participating health professional programmes of the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic

What do students say?

  • "A really strong learning experience, but within a short period of time"
  • "Different professions communicate differently, so actually developing an understanding of what your colleagues want is important"
  • "This can change the way you consider your patient in a broader scope ... changing things up in a collaborative way"
