Overview

A talented PhD candidate interested in Rongoā Māori is being recruited to join Lyn Wise's laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. The PhD candidate will multidisciplinary team from the University of Otago, the New Zealand Institute of Plant & Food Research Ltd and the Nga Uri o te Ngahere Trust.

The PhD will contribute to a larger study investigating the whakapapa of Mamaku (Cyathea medullaris, black tree fern) and its role and function in natural ecosystems to inform its mode of healing action in humans, identifying the unique properties of Rongoā Mamaku gels and establishing their mechanism(s) of action as natural wound healing remedies.

Highly motivated individuals with a BSc (Hons) or MSc in Pharmacology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidates will have practical knowledge in cell culture. Excellent communication skills, willingness to work in a team, and the ability to plan and interpret experiments in an independent manner are important attributes.

Funding Notes

This is a fully funded project for three years that includes an annual stipend, tuition fees, and consumable costs. These are available through a MBIE Endeavour Fund Smart Idea project. It is expected the project will start early in 2022 (January) or late 2021 or when filled.

Although this project is funded by an external source, applicants must be eligible for admission to the PhD programme at the University of Otago and to apply for a University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship. A GPA of equivalent to an Otago GPA of 8.0 (A) on a nine point scale or greater is expected.
