Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws - Studying for a Master of Marketing.
The opportunity for personal development was one of the main factors that led Lucy King to choose the University of Otago.
“Coming from Auckland, it was a chance for me to gain independence and develop life skills, while being fully immersed in my studies and the Dunedin culture.”
“I came with an open mind and few expectations. In the end this meant that Otago completely surpassed what I imagined my university experience could be.”
Outside her studies, developing personal friendships was an important part of her time at Otago.
“I enjoyed spending time with friends – who became family. Otago is the only university in the country that fosters such a close-knit community. It's great to have made strong connections, which I will carry with me throughout life. I also really enjoyed giving back to this community by volunteering at the Otago Community Law Centre.”
Lucy found both the Law Faculty and the Department of Marketing staff extremely supportive and approachable.
“Studying and learning in such an encouraging environment really set me up to achieve, and it was clear that hard work did not go unnoticed.”
“I also enjoyed spending time in the Central Library and the Otago Business School. Both buildings are very modern with fantastic facilities for study, which put me at ease when I felt the pressure of deadlines.”
After graduating Lucy worked on a research project with the Marketing department, for which she was awarded a Summer Scholarship.
“This investigation focuses on digital media and business analytics. We are collecting and analysing data from Twitter in order to gauge public political opinion, and potentially anticipate the 2020 election outcome.”
In 2020, Lucy is furthering her studies by taking on a master's degree. For anyone considering studying at Otago she would give the following advice:
“Take the plunge! Otago offers the most worthwhile opportunities not only to receive the best education, but also to make life-long friendships and memories. Otago offers an environment for personal growth, building strength of character and producing very well-rounded graduates.”
