The study of human nutrition covers all the areas that have an impact on health as influenced by food. It involves:
- knowledge of food and food products as sources of nutrients
- nutrition for health throughout life
- international nutrition – developing countries
- food as a fuel sports performance
- nutrition for treating and preventing disease
- nutrient requirements
- the digestion and absorption of food and the metabolism of nutrients
Undergraduate study in Nutrition
Otago offers two undergraduate degrees with nutrition major options:
- BSc in Human Nutrition
- BBiomedSc in Nutrition and Metabolism in Human Health

Postgraduate study in Nutrition
There are many options for postgraduate study in Human Nutrition, ranging from the Bachelor of Science with honours (BSc(hons)) through to the Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD).

Diploma for Graduates (DipGrad)
The DipGrad is an undergraduate-level qualification intended for students who have completed an undergraduate degree. In some cases a student who has not earned a degree may also be eligible. The programme may be completed by full-time candidates in one year or by part-time candidates over more than one year.
