Human Nutrition students are eligible for the following scholarships.

Masters scholarships

University of Otago Master's Research Scholarship

The University of Otago Master's Research Scholarship provides funding to support domestic Master's students completing a thesis at the University of Otago.

University of Otago Māori Master's Research Scholarship

The University of Otago Māori Master's Research Scholarship provides funding to support Māori Master's students studying at the University of Otago.

University of Otago Pacific Islands Master's Research Scholarship

The University of Otago Pacific Islands Master's Research Scholarship provides funding to support indigenous Pacific Island Master's students studying at the University of Otago.

Research Master's scholarships – international applicants

Due to the limited number of these scholarships, applicants require very good grades to be successful. We only recommend applying if your grades in the later years of your degree are at A or A+ level.

Duffus Lubecki Postgraduate Scholarship in Applied Science

The Scholarship may be held only by a student of Applied Sciences (which is deemed to include Dentistry, Medicine, Consumer and Applied Sciences, Physical Education and Science).

PhD or Master's Scholarships

Fanny Evans Postgraduate Scholarship for Women

The scholarship may be held by a woman candidate who is eligible to enrol for a doctoral degree, although, in exceptional circumstances, the Scholarship may be held by a Master's candidate.  The purposes of the Scholarship are to encourage postgraduate study and research by women, especially in disciplines in which women are under-represented, and to assist women who have had a career break to return to University for updating or retraining.

PhD Scholarships

University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship

The University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship provides funding to support doctoral students studying at the University of Otago.

The Scholarship is available to both domestic and international students. Candidates for professional doctorates, as well as the PhD, are welcome to apply.

University of Otago Māori Doctoral Scholarship

The University of Otago Māori Doctoral Scholarship provides funding to support Māori PhD students studying at the University of Otago.

The Scholarship is available to domestic students. Candidates for professional doctorates, as well as the PhD, are welcome to apply.

University of Otago Pacific Islands Doctoral Scholarship

The University of Otago Pacific Island Doctoral Scholarship provides funding to support indigenous Pacific Island doctoral students studying at the University of Otago.

The Scholarship is available to both domestic and international students. Candidates for professional doctorates, as well as the PhD, are welcome to apply.

Dr Sulaiman Daud 125th Jubilee Postgraduate Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1994 to mark the 125th Anniversary of the foundation of the University of Otago, New Zealand's oldest university.  The purpose of the scholarship is to assist an exceptional postgraduate research student from Malaysia to attend the University.

Undergraduate prizes

Undergraduate prizes are awarded to exceptional students in Human Nutrition.  The prizes below are awarded based on grades and do not need to be applied for.

  • Archerfield School Prize (200 level BSc or BAppSc student with the highest level of attainment in the Human Nutrition Major)
  • Evelyn Waddell Memorial Prize (300 level student with the highest level of attainment in Human Nutrition papers dealing with Food Service management)
  • Marion Robinson Prize in Human Nutrition (300 level BSc or BSc(Hons) student with the highest level of achievement in Human Nutrition Papers)
  • Department of Human Nutrition International Nutrition Prize (300 level HUNT346 International Nutrition and Health student with the highest level of attainment)
  • Department of Human Nutrition Sports Nutrition Prize (300 level HUNT345 Applied Sports Nutrition student with the highest level of attainment)
  • Department of Human Nutrition Sport and Exercise Nutrition Prize (300 level BAppSc in Sports and Exercise Nutrition student with the highest attainment in Human Nutrition papers worth at least 54 points)
  • Department of Human Nutrition Spirit of Service and Community Engagement Prize (BSc Human Nutrition, BappSc Sports and Exercise Nutrition or BBioMedSc in Nutrition and Metabolism in Human Health two students who demonstrate a significant impact with a tangible benefit to the community and/or promote the well-being, health and development of the community through extracurricular activities).  
    • Applicants will have demonstrated spirit of service and engagement through some of the following:
      *inspirational leadership in working with the public and/or with external organisations;
      *a collaborative approach to engaging and partnering with others;
      *active support of their peers;
      *exceptional motivation and commitment to delivering for their community; and
      *demonstrated a level of responsibility that goes above and beyond what is expected.
    • Applications for the Spirit of Service and Community Engagement Prize are due at 4pm on the last Friday of Semester two.  Applicants must complete the application form and return it to admin.humannutrition@otago.ac.nz

Postgraduate prizes

  • Joan McKenzie Parnell prize in Human Nutrition (300 or 400 level student with a high standard of achievement in Human Nutrition who is proceeding to a course of full-time study for a postgraduate degree or diploma)
  • J Cowie Nichols Prize in Nutrition (best dissertation in Human Nutrition submitted by a BSc or BCApSc student at 4th year Hons or Masters level)
  • Marion Robinson Prize in Human Nutrition (MSc or MAppSc student who has an article on trace elements or micronutrients accepted by an appropriate peer reviewed journal)
  • Muriel Bell Memorial Prize (400 level student who is judged to have achieved the highest standard of attainment in Human Nutrition)
