Position

Lecturers typically teach across a range of courses to postgraduate level.  This includes assessment and course administration duties, and they will usually have leadership roles in the administration of programmes.  Lecturers may have significant course administration responsibilities including curriculum design.

Lecturers carry out activities to maintain and develop their scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline and may be involved in commercial research activities.  Lecturers are independent researchers who publish and advance scholarship in their field and/or advance professional practice. Lecturers may be involved in knowledge-transfer to industry and/or the community. Performance Lecturers advance artistic practice.

Lecturers contribute to Departmental planning and serve the relevant profession and/or academic discipline and contribute to the wider community.

It is expected that academic staff will be routinely at work on campus so they are available to assist students and for students to see the University as a place of active scholarship.

Expectations

Teaching, assessment and curriculum development

It is expected that Lecturers:

  1. conduct research-informed teaching across a range and level of courses in accordance with their share of the Department or School's teaching programme;
  2. teach to a standard which meets the quality standards expected in the Department/School and profession/discipline.

It is expected that Lecturers may be:

  1. preparing course plans, outlines and materials for delivery of classes assigned, in consultation with other senior colleagues;
  2. facilitating learning by presenting lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and papers;
  3. developing assessment material related to courses taught;\
  4. providing assessment and feedback to students on their progress towards learning outcomes;
  5. fostering the development of individual student talent;
  6. implementing innovations in teaching, assessment and curriculum development;
  7. providing course advice, where appropriate;
  8. acting as the convenor of one or more papers, where appropriate;
  9. providing postgraduate supervision.

Research and/or commercialisation of research and/or advancing professional practice and scholarship activities

It is expected that Lecturers:

  1. either produce quality assured publications within the field or discipline, either individually or as part of a group; or, for performance staff, contribute to the advancement of artistic practice through performance as a soloist or a director, as evidenced by published scholarly or critical reviews.

It is expected that Lecturers may be:

  1. obtaining research funding and/or grants from industry;
  2. attending and presenting papers at academic conferences, both nationally and internationally;
  3. attending and presenting at national hui or wānanga and/or international indigenous conferences;
  4. taking part in effective research collaborations;
  5. engaging in scholarly activities: eg acting as a referee, engaging as an examiner;
  6. being involved in significant artistic, technical and professional performance;
  7. contributing to the commercialisation of research (new intellectual property, products and services; knowledge-transfer).

Service to the University and the community

It is expected that Lecturers:

  1. contribute to administration in their Department or School, Division and the University.

It is expected that Lecturers may be:

  1. representing the Department externally through contributions to committees, working parties etc. within the Division;
  2. representing the Department through contributions to committees, working parties etc within the Division, or the wider University (including the Māori Strategic Framework);
  3. sharing knowledge with the community outside the University and contributing to local and national communities through involvement in the development of policy, practice, and cultural activities (eg: iwi/Māori development);
  4. contributing to the research environment;
  5. contributing to the profession/discipline;
  6. transferring knowledge and technology to the community, industry or commerce, as appropriate.

Other

It is expected that Lecturers:

  1. take an active interest in the activities relating to the Department;
  2. meet all compliance and reporting requirements;
  3. work collegially with staff and students in the Department, School and Division.

Employment conditions

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent doctorate in appropriate field normally preferred. Masters degree minimum, and or relevant postgraduate qualifications.
  • Demonstrated capacity for independent research.
  • May be transferring knowledge to the community and industry for the development of products and services that benefit society.

One step annually on salary scale through to the top of the scale, subject to satisfactory performance.
