The University, City and Region

The University

Uppsala University, founded in 1477 and the oldest university in Scandinavia, has a long tradition of research and innovative thinking. The University has six Nobel Prize Laureates and on 13 December each year the new Nobel Laureates visit the university to deliver a public lecture. Uppsala University is ranked among the top-100 universities in the world. A portion of Uppsala University's excellent reputation – both in Sweden and abroad – can be ascribed to the efforts of earlier generations.

The City of Uppsala

Uppsala, the fourth largest city in Sweden with a population of 190,000 people, has the charm of a small town and the opportunities of a big city. It is located 70 km (45 miles) north of Stockholm (about 40 minutes by train) and is a city with a living history. Old Uppsala (Gamla Uppsala) was the focal point of the Kingdom of the Swedes. Uppsala is from an international point of view a small, calm and safe place. This charming old town is easily accessible by northbound train or bus from Stockholm (1 hour) and Arlanda international airport (30 minutes). Uppsala is located within the county of Uppland in a historically rich landscape, which a millennium ago was one of the most prominent centres of the Viking culture.

The dominating landmarks in Uppsala are the large cathedral (Domkyrkan) and the castle (Slottet), both located in the centre of the city. Beside the castle and the dome the older university buildings, many of them highly interesting and beautiful, dominate the city centre around the small river Fyrisån. Most impressive are the university house and the university library, Carolina Rediviva. The character of Uppsala is to a large extent dependent on the presence of the two universities (Uppsala University in the city centre and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences just south of the city). The students are a dominating and important part of the society, giving the population a youthful and modern impression.
