Information: Disabling of SMBv1 protocol on HCS

Timeframe: Effective from Friday, 28th June 2024

Services Affected: High-Capacity Central File Storage (HCS)

Audience: All University staff and students

Description: In accordance with security best practices, ITS Infrastructure will no longer offer support for the SMBv1 protocol on all HCS clusters. Clients will need to connect via SMBv2 or higher from the 28th of June 2024.

SMB is used by devices (both Mac and PC) to connect to HCS. Version 1 of the protocol (SMBv1) has been depreciated since 2013 and therefore few devices should have reason to use SMBv1.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this service interruption. Please contact AskOtago if you have any questions.
