Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America

The Prime Minister's Scholarships for Asia and Latin America are a programme funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand. Many of the students within our Chinese, Japanese and Asian programmes have received the scholarship and travelled to Asia to further their studies.

Alliance Française de Dunedin – Prize in French

Founded in 1979 by the Alliance Française de Dunedin.

The Prize is awarded annually by the University Council on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Humanities), to the best student in French at 200-level.

Alliance Française de Dunedin – Special Prize

Founded in 1979 by the Alliance Française de Dunedin.

The Prize is awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities), to the best student in French at any level of University study. If in any year an award is not made an additional award may be made in a subsequent year. If more than one award is made in any year the value of the prize shall be shared.

Austrian Literature Prize

Established in 1995 by donation from the Austrian Government. Last awarded 2016.

The prize is awarded annually by the University Council on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities), after consultation with the Head of the Department of German Language and Literature and the Austrian Embassy, to a third year student in the Department, for the best academic essay or academic project on a work or works of Austrian Literature.

Eric W Herd Memorial Prize

Established in 2002 by Mrs J.J.Herd in memory of her husband, Professor Eric Herd, Professor of Modern Languages from 1956 and later Professor of German until his retirement in 1986.

The Prize is awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities), for outstanding performance in German Studies at any level. The prize may not be awarded to the same student more than once.

Flora Allan Memorial Prize

Founded in the year 1952 by the Otago University Women's Association, who gave the Council the sum of £100 to hold in trust, to apply the income to a prize to the best woman student in some specific foreign language, the prize to be called the Flora Allan Memorial Prize. Flora Allan was a pupil at the Otago Girls' High School from 1876-1882 and was dux in 1879. She attended the Dunedin Teachers Training College from 1884-1885 and the University of Otago where she gained an MA degree with second class honours in Latin and French in 1888. She joined the staff at Otago Girls' High School in 1890, and in 1912 she became Principal of the school, a position she held until her retirement in 1921.

The prize is awarded annually by the University Council on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities), as follows:

In 2005 and thereafter biennially to the best woman student of German at 100-level.
In 2006 and thereafter biennially to the best woman student of French at 100-level.

G E Thompson Prize

The prize is in memory of G. E. Thompson, Lecturer in French from 1902 to 1916, and Professor of Modern Languages from 1916 to 1944.

The prize is awarded annually by the University Council on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities), as follows:

In even years to the best student of French at 300-level.
In odd years to the best student of German at 300-level.

R G Stone Prize for Oral French

Established in 1988 from contributions to a fund subscribed by students, colleagues and friends of Emeritus Professor R.G. Stone in recognition of his distinguished career and his inspiration in promoting spoken French in the Department of French Language and Literature at this University.

The prize may be awarded annually to a student whose oral work shall be deemed of appropriate merit.

The award shall be made by the University Council on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities) in consultation with the Head of the Department of French Language and Literature.

University Book Shop Flaubert Prize

Established in 1993 by the Directors of the University Book Shop Otago Limited. Last awarded 2020.

The prize is awarded annually by the University Council, on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities) and the Head of the Department of French Language and Literature, to a student intending to major in French, for excellence in French literature.
