About the research network Cultures, Histories and Identities in Visual Studies
Cultures, Histories and Identities in Visual Studies | Te Ahurea, Te Tāhuhu Kōrero, me te Tuakiri ki kā Akoraka Ataata is a research network dedicated to exploring, facilitating and supporting research and publication on the visual arts, with a focus on the fine arts.
An interdisciplinary network, it has as its goal to foster new research by bringing together researchers in New Zealand and elsewhere with common interests from disciplines across the Humanities using different methodologies with the aim of encouraging productive dialogue on the general topic of the visual arts in national and post-national aesthetic contexts, particularly as these relate to issues of dominant and subaltern culture, history, and identity.
The network sponsors an evening Research Seminar in Visual Studies, which typically meets six times a year. The seminar is hosted and convened by Dr Edward Hanfling, the network's Otago Polytechnic liaison. The network also supports the Occasional Essay Series, which introduces work by local artists, edited by Emeritus Professors Alistair Fox and Hilary Radner (University of Otago), and published by RDS Gallery:

We welcome new members from local and international institutions as well as independent scholars, especially, but not exclusively, those whose research interests lie in the art of Aotearoa | New Zealand.
