The Otago Community Treatment Order study (Otago CTO) ran from 1999 to 2008.

Aims of the study

Its major aims were to enhance understanding of patient, family and clinician experiences of compulsory community mental health care, and to consider the optimum legal framework for community treatment orders of that kind (or for outpatient commitment, as this form of care is known in the United States).

The researchers

The project involved researchers from the University of Otago's Faculty of Law, the Department of Psychological Medicine and the Department of Community and Family Studies.

The researchers worked in collaboration with health care professionals and Māori consultants.

Funding

The work was supported by grants from the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the New Zealand Law Foundation.
