David Esplin was the Reference Librarian at the University Library and honorary librarian at Selwyn College. He was passionate about early printing and spent his evenings and weekends cataloguing the William Ardene Shoults Collection, which was then housed at the College but subsequently transferred to the University Library in 1965. Esplin left New Zealand in May 1962 to take up a position at UCLA Library, and then moved to the University of Toronto Library, where he played a part in building up its outstanding collections. Esplin died in 1983.
