Straight Jackets: the Art of the Book Jacket University of Otago Straight Jackets: the art of the book jacket

The image chosen for a book jacket may be an imaginative one or an illustration of an incident or character in the book. Once chosen, it must carry the book and compete with the others on display. Again balance is of the utmost importance; the jacket cannot be messy. The design of the book jacket on Héafod's work detailing the diary of a research ballistician is very effective. Indeed, the sparing use of lines and an understated title (without author acknowledgement) adds to the intrigue. On opening the book (as one must) the first sentence reads: 'Gimani was terminated on September 1, 1960.'
