This calotype photograph depicts Tertius as an older man with a rather sour expression. Perhaps this photograph has assisted recent biographers in their descriptions of a grumpy, tousled and ineffective teacher, with a tendency to ramble, and generally lacking the academic thrust of his predecessors.
