Cabinet 6: Crime & Murder

Crime and mystery pay. Publishers Original Novels Foundation acknowledged this fact and published and printed (among others) these three American titles in Australia. Stewart Sterling’s Alarm in the Night, featuring well-known Fire Marshall Pedley, was originally published by Dutton in 1949. Sterling’s real name was Prentice Winchell, a US scriptwriter.
Addison Simmons’s Dead Weight – about the death of a small town drug store owner – was published by Phoenix Press in 1946. Their original cover was not as striking as the one on this Australian reprint edition. Lester Dent (1904-1959) was a prolific writer for Argosy and Black Mask, and later produced his well-known ‘Doc Savage’ series. He wrote in bursts and never missed a deadline. High Stakes was just one result from a punishing writing schedule.
