The Writer at Work
In 1999, C. K. Stead was joint winner of the Landfall Essay Competition. In coming down to Dunedin to collect it, he was charmed by both Dunedin and UOP. He offered The Writer at Work to the Press. It was a small coup, because most of his works had been (and are still) published by Auckland University Press. Stead's attempt to bring 'civil discourse among intelligent readers' ruffled a few feathers. Given his standing as a major New Zealand writer, and the fact that any publicity is good publicity, sales were no doubt good. He was certainly pleased with the production.
