John A. Lee
McEldowney considered Erik Olssen's biography on John A. Lee (original title: Jack Lee) as a major work and he regarded the author’s approach as quite critical but sympathetic. In 1977, Brian Turner was editor at McIndoe’s, and it was his idea to have a huge book launch, mobilizing the press, TV, and Lee, who was asked to talk about the book. The event was held at the Council Chambers, and according to Olssen, Lee dominated the floor. He was an impressive speaker. It was also felt that sales and the publicity, of which there was much, would compensate for the additional outlay of a launch. The book cost $13,880 to print and retailed at $14.95.
