The Whale's Wake

The Whale's Wake

Harry Morton's book on whaling underwent a few title changes as he proceeded with the text. In November 1980 it was 'New England at New Zealand'; in April 1981 it was 'South-west Pacific Whaling'; and by April 1982, when the University of Hawaii Press agreed to fund 3,000 copies, it was The Whale's Wake. Such an attractive and large book is credit to the industry of both McEldowney and McIndoe; even today it remains a standard work on whaling in New Zealand. The book was a finalist in the 1983 non-fiction New Zealand Book Awards and was shortlisted for the 1983 Wattie Book of the Year Award.
