2016 celebrations for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori at Te Whare Wānanga o Otāgo were delayed a week to coincide when students returned from semester break.

This year the Library collaborated with the Hauteruruku Waka (canoe) Club based at Puke Te Raki Marae in Karitāne to bring the double hulled waka, Hauteruruku into the Central Library.

Hauteruruku mauri stones

  • The waka's name Hauteruruku refers to the flight of the Karearea or New Zealand Falcon, specifically referring to when the Karearea swoops down to collect its prey.

  • The two hulls are named after two prominent stars Autahi (Canopus) and Takurua (Sirius).

We would like to thank the whānau of Hauteruruku including Brendan Flack, Suzi Flack, Hinerangi Ferrall-Heath, Khyla Russell, Ngahuia Mita and Anne-Marie Jackson for allowing the Library to host Hauteruruku in our Whare Pukapuka and the privilege of sharing the kaupapa of connecting and re-connecting with awa (rivers) and moana (sea).

The Library's research floor talk event was held on Wednesday 13th July on the ground floor of the Central Library. Research talks were in Pecha Kucha style on the theme of all things related to Tangaroa, Wai, Waka, Moana.

Ngā Whakakitenga o te Whare Pukapuka

With Hauteruruku on display in the Central Library, the other University libraries showcased Māori research during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori...

  • Dr Moana Theodore's longitudinal research work on Māori graduates: Ngā Tauira Māori o te Rohe a Ahikāroa was on display in the Science Library.
  • The Law display was developed with collaboration from Dr Paerau Warbrick, Dr Mick Strack and Professor Jacinta Ruru and featured Te Kooti Māori, the Māori Land Court.
  • Associate Professor Suzanne Pitama's Māori health research and Sir Mason Durie's Te Pae Mahutonga Māori health model were highlighted at the Health Sciences Library.
  • Hocken Collections featured Tangiwai Rewi's research on intergenerational knowledge transmission and the Ngāruawāhia Tūrangawaewae Regatta.
