Our main campus in Dunedin has been recognised as one of the most beautiful university campuses in the world
The Dunedin campus offers a mixture of historic and state-of-the-art, purpose-built buildings, beautiful green spaces, and the Leith river flowing through the middle of campus. The University has an ambitious campus development plan, with several new facilities recently completed or currently being built.
Our campus has everything you need for student life – from cafés and libraries to high-tech learning facilities and student support services.
Beautiful spaces, leading-edge facilities
Live where you learn – all you need just minutes away
Most first‑year students live at one of 14 residential colleges, located on or near campus. From some colleges, it's literally a 2‑minute walk to lectures, and a 5‑to‑10‑minute walk to the city centre.
In second year, most students go flatting in Dunedin's iconic student quarter. The most well-known streets are right next to campus, but there are thousands of flats where you can choose a quieter lifestyle that's still within walking distance.
The central campus is a pedestrian-first area and vehicle access is limited, but accessible parking options are available for students with mobility issues.
A national presence
As well as our main campus in Dunedin, Otago has a presence in four other New Zealand cities.
Auckland
Community engagement and advanced dentistry training
Otago’s Auckland Centre in the central city operates as the vital hub for our presence in New Zealand’s largest city, facilitating engagement with alumni, prospective students and the wider community.
In 2021, Otago opened the Auckland Dental Facility in Manurewa, with state-of-the art teaching facilities and patient treatment clinic.
Wellington
Health Sciences teaching and research
The University of Otago, Wellington (UOW) offers New Zealand's only training in radiation therapy – the Bachelor of Radiation Therapy – and hosts some undergraduate medical and other Health Sciences students during their clinical training. The Wellington campus also offers postgraduate Health Sciences courses and postgraduate research opportunities in a diverse range of fields.
Christchurch
Health Sciences teaching and research
Located next to Christchurch Hospital, the University of Otago, Christchurch (UOC) is New Zealand’s most research-intensive postgraduate Health Sciences campus. It also offers over 50 postgraduate taught courses, and hosts some undergraduate medical and physiotherapy students during their clinical training years.
Invercargill
Teacher education and Health Sciences study hub
Our College of Education Invercargill Campus offers a range of teacher education programmes, while the Health Sciences Southland Study Hub provides study and research space for students on clinical placements in Southland.
