Campus Watch (24/7)
A safe campus, a safe city
Dunedin is a safe, student-focused city and, with all residential colleges and key facilities within easy walking distance of campus, getting around by foot is easy.
The University of Otago is home to New Zealand’s only designated campus safety and support team. Our Campus Watch staff are are always available to offer assistance and advice so that you can feel safe on our Dunedin campus and beyond.
What we do to keep you safe
Our campus watch teams patrol the campus and surrounding areas 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so you can feel safe and supported at all times.
Worried about walking home late at night? Our Safety patrol car is available to drive you home from 1pm to 3am, every Wednesday to Saturday during the academic year.
Emergency phones situated across the campus connect directly to the Campus Watch control room. We're there 24/7 so you can call us any time you need support, day or night.
Need to talk to the police? The University of Otago is one of only two educational facilities in New Zealand to have a policeman permanently on site.
Because of the unique residential nature of Otago, we maintain a range of security systems across campus to make sure students are safe and well cared for.
In case of an emergency our Emergency Broadcast System will ensure that all students on campus are notified by a warning siren, followed by a voice announcement depending on the type of emergency.
We also offer safety checks on your flat while you are away, advice on what to do if you lose your ID card, and you can come to us with any other safety concern you may have. And if we can't help with a certain issue, we will refer you to someone who can.
