Joe joined the Department of Management in April 2020. Prior to coming to Otago, he served as an associate professor in the College of Business and Innovation at the University of Toledo and as an assistant professor in the College of Business at the University of Wyoming in the United States. Joe earned his B.S.E. (Civil Engineering) and M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University, and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he worked as a structural designer for Barber & Hoffman, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also worked as a senior HR analyst for the Timken Company in Canton, Ohio. Dr. Cooper's research focuses on the motivation and performance of individuals through the study of workplace commitments, goal setting, organizational roles, and culture. His teaching experience includes courses in Organizations and Sustainability, Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Recruitment and Selection, Human Resource Development, and Managerial Skills.
Joe grew up in the mountains of West Virginia and loves all things outdoors. He is an avid skier and can often be found hiking or mountain biking with his wife and three kids.
