Te Aka a Tāwhaki - the Māori Resources Collection, was established in 2003 and is situated on the ground floor of the Central Library. Translated literally this name means 'The vine of Tāwhaki'. Tāwhaki is an important ancestor mentioned in ancient Māori and other Polynesian narratives who climbed an 'Aka' or 'Vine' to the uppermost heavens on a journey to obtain higher knowledge.
Te Aka a Tāwhaki acknowledges the holistic dimension of Te Ao Māori by bringing together a collection of core Māori resources across a range of disciplines, including books, reports, journals, maps and atlases.
You are welcome to use the Collection in the Library. Items are not available for borrowing. Check the Library Catalogue for duplicate copies held in the Central Library, Hocken Collections (on Anzac Avenue) or in other Libraries on campus.
