About this scholarship
The WHAI Physics scholarship is offered through the Māori Health Workforce Development Unit at the University of Otago. The scholarship supports Māori students to prepare for the PHSI 191 Biological Physics paper, as part of Health Sciences First Year ( HSFY ).
Designed to support Māori students interested in a career in health, the WHAI Physics Scholarship provides access to the JumpSTART Physics programme, as well as continuous support through the PHSI 191 paper and HSFY .
WHAI Physics Scholarships cover:
- Tuition fees for the University of Otago JumpSTART Physics programme
- Residential college accommodation for the duration of the JumpSTART course (3 weeks)
- Additional resources, tutorials and academic support throughout enrolment in PHSI 191
WHAI Physics Scholarship recipients will be required to attend a mihi whakatau in recognition on their award.
WHAI Physics scholarship staff will meet with individual recipients at key points throughout the semester to provide support where needed. Recipients are expected to engage in additional PHSI 191 academic support available as part of the scholarship.
About the JumpSTART Physics course
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the background knowledge and study skills necessary to confidently undertake the PHSI 191 Biological Physics paper at Otago. It is designed for students whose learning in secondary school physics and mathematics is incomplete, having not taken Year 12 (NCEA Level 2) physics.
Students undertaking this course will still need to meet the University’s admission and entrance criteria in order to proceed to full credit study.

Criteria for the WHAI Physics Scholarship
Successful applicants must:
- Have Māori whakapapa
- Show a commitment to pursue Health Sciences study and a career in health
- Have met the entry requirements for the University of Otago JumpSTART Physics course
Application process
Apply for the WHAI Physics Scholarship
Each year, applications close 15 November, 5:00pm. Accepted scholarships will be provided for the following year. Submit your completed application form to:

Students must submit a JumpSTART Physics application and enrol into the Health Sciences First Year programme ( HSFY ) to be considered for the scholarship.
