Developing a FRAmework for maNagement of Concussion in schools in Aotearoa New Zealand (FRANCS)
Abstract
Most people who suffer a concussion recover within 10 days, and early diagnosis and implementation of a recovery plan is critical.
Findings of earlier research conducted by New Zealand Rugby suggested that players with concussion often did not receive required support in secondary schools.
Our research group worked with 14 schools over the past 3 years to co-design and implement a framework for supporting students with concussion in their return to learn, physical activity and sports. We also sought input from various stakeholders of the national sports organisations, and healthcare and education sectors.
In this seminar, we are presenting the processes and the outcomes of the project. The next step is to prepare for a roll-out of the framework to schools across the country.
The project is a collaboration between Auckland University of Technology (AUT), New Zealand Rugby and the University of Otago. It was supported by a Lottery Health Grant, the Otago Participatory Science Platform (as part of the MBIE Curious Mind initiative) and a Research Development Fund of AUT.
