Join us for this summer talk being presented by Dr Mike Joy, Institute for Governance and Policy Studies, Victoria University of Wellington.

Drinking water, wastewater and stormwater will soon be administered centrally by a new independent regulator, Taumata Arowai. Considering the perilous state of the three waters in New Zealand this sounds like a great idea, but the approach is classic government 'ambulance at bottom of cliff' thinking. For drinking water, they have forgotten the fourth water. Rather than trying to treat the symptoms we should be looking at the source of the problem – that is the source of the water.

Dr Mike Joy

Mike has been working for three decades at the interface of science and policy in New Zealand. A senior researcher with the Institute of Governance and Policy Studies at Victoria University, he works on improving the connection between science, policy and real outcomes to address the multiple environmental issues facing New Zealand. He has received several awards for this work including the 2013 Royal Society of New Zealand Charles Fleming Award for protection of the New Zealand environment, the Morgan Foundation inaugural River Voice Award in 2015 and the inaugural New Zealand Universities Critic and Conscience award in 2016.
