The true story of Dr Willem ‘Pim’ Kolff: Dutch resistance hero, Doctor, and inventor of the first functioning artificial kidney – all at the same time
Dr Willem Kolff was the first person to successfully dialyse a patient with renal failure.
He did it in the occupied Netherlands during WW2, whilst also working for the resistance and hiding people from the Nazis by helping them fake illness.
His machine was made from scavenged bits of crashed bomber, sewing machines, a Ford car cooling system, electric kettles and sausage skins.
