This year marks the 50th anniversary of the magnitude 5 ‘Dunedin Earthquake’. Although the damage from this earthquake was comparatively minor, it is a reminder that Dunedin is not immune from dangerous levels of ground shaking.

In this talk, Dr Jack Williams from the Department of Geology at the University of Otago will highlight new evidence for local M 7–7.4 Akatore Fault earthquakes occurring in the last 10,000 years, and the challenges this presents for forecasting earthquake hazards in Dunedin.
