Not a bad way to spend your summer… The 73 students enrolled in TOUR214 Introduction to the Wine Business were not bothered by the dreary weather outside as they took part in the paper's first wine tasting workshop on Tuesday. In addition to honing their tasting skills, the paper introduces students to the production process, wine tourism and wine marketing.
Despite the weather looking more like winter than summer, Summer School did in fact kick off this week bringing nearly 1800 students to Otago campuses for six weeks of intensive study.
A total of 56 papers are being offered with 14 of them new to Summer School this year. This year's offerings includes opportunities to learn the ins and outs of computer game design, to study the phenomenon of Jane Austen, to pick up a new language and much more.
Another feature of this year's Summer School is the wallpaper caravan art installation organised by artists and College of Education art educators Pamela Brown and Kerry Mackay. Until 16 January, students are invited to express their creative sides and design their own artwork to add to the already eclectic caravan.
Summer School and Continuing Education Director Dr Elaine Webster says she hopes students aren't struggling too much with the weather.
“I'm hoping it will clear up. We have had to move the wallpaper caravan arts project off the campus lawn and into the Link because of the rain…just as well it fit through the doors!
"Maybe it will be easier for students to focus since there's no sunny weather to entice students outdoors,” said Dr Webster.
