Wilson Parking New Zealand Limited took over operation of the Albany St car park 1 February.
Two changes have been made to car parking on the Dunedin campus and more are on the way.
Adjustments have already been made at the Albany Street car park and to the park and ride service, now more are following this month for individual University car parks, Property Services Division Director Dean Macaulay says.
Because the division is aware the current University parking model has room for improvement – including how allocated and casual parks are managed and the parking policy – it will investigate this year “ways we could better meet more needs, including equitable access to parks and safety on campus”, Mr Macaulay says.
Albany St car park
Wilson Parking New Zealand Limited took over operation of the University’s Albany St car park on 1 February this year.
University staff and students will still pay the same amount to use the car park: $2 an hour up to a maximum of $6.50 a day. To get this rate they must present an active University ID card at the payment terminals (not the exit barrier).
The University will not be subsidising non-university people so they will be charged a higher daily rate of $8.50, while continuing to pay the same hourly rate of $2.
The University is providing Wilson Parking with a current list of valid ID cards weekly on Fridays. If a new ID card is issued during the week the discount will not be available until the following Monday.
All payment changes are clearly signalled on signs at the car park.
Changing the car park’s management to Wilson Parking advantages the University because it will increase the number of parks, stop subsidies for non-university people, and introduce more reliable equipment, Mr Macaulay says.
If you have any issues using the University’s Albany Street car park, please contact Wilson Parking – details are on signs at the car park.
Please note:
To get University rates, staff and students need to get a parking ticket at the entrance column and present their student/staff ID when they pay.
A transaction fee of 60 cents is now incurred for all contactless transactions ie: using a credit card or paywave/tap ‘n go with an eftpos or debit card
No transaction fee is incurred paying with:
- Eftpos when inserting the card and using a pin – these payments can only be made at the payment terminals, not the exit barrier
- Cash
Technology changes mean the payment terminals do not ‘recognise’ University ID cards issued before 2014 so anyone with those cards needs to visit the ID Card Office for a replacement to get discounted parking (there is no charge for those replacement ID cards)
Individual University car parks
Property Services would like to advise staff it is increasing charges for individual car parks from 8 March, to reflect the increasing cost of providing parks since the last increase in 2015.
Fees for undercover parks will increase from $21.43 to $25.00 a week and for parks without cover will increase from $16 to $20 a week. These prices are still much cheaper than market rates in other busy Dunedin areas.
Park and ride
To help cover the cost of the park and ride service based in the Forsyth Barr Stadium car park, Property Services has introduced an annual administration fee of $50 a year for 2021 for this previously free service.
There have not been charges for the parking or the shuttle since their introduction in 2011 but the rising costs of leasing the parks from Dunedin Venues, the shuttle, and other overheads means the University must cover at least some of its administration and legal costs.
