Mauro Farella, a Professor of Orthodontics in the Faculty of Dentistry, took the photo which has become the November 2018 digital calendar during a visit to the Aquarium of Genoa - the largest aquarium in Italy and the second largest in Europe.
Professor Mauro Farella likes to imagine that the girl featured in November 2018’s digital calendar was whispering a secret to the dolphin when he snapped her photo.
Professor Farella, took the photo during a visit to the Aquarium of Genoa - the largest aquarium in Italy and the second largest in Europe.
"At the time of the shot, she was whispering some words to the dolphin, which I could not really catch. I like to imagine though that she was saying: ‘I am a little Mermaid, let’s swim together, we will have a lot of fun’."
He says the girl in the photo was running all around the walls of the tank, chasing the dolphin by sliding her hands on the glass wall.
“At the time of the shot, she was whispering some words to the dolphin, which I could not really catch. I like to imagine though that she was saying: ‘I am a little Mermaid, let’s swim together, we will have a lot of fun’,” he says.
The Otago Bulletin Board digital calendar, released each month, features the 12 winning and notable entries from the previous year’s photo competition.
Professor Farella’s photo stood out as something special.
He says his passion for photography is long-standing.
“I really enjoy taking shots in New Zealand and around the world, with a special interest for portraits, especially of my children.”
