University of Otago connections play a special part in the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki exhibition A Place to Paint: Colin McCahon in Auckland.
The exhibition coincides with the centenary of McCahon's birth and was co-curated by Otago alumna Julia Waite, Curator New Zealand Art at the gallery. It also includes a special presentation of The Wake, 1958, on loan to the gallery from the University of Otago's Hocken Collections Uare Taoka o Hākena. McCahon painted this 16-panel work in the Auckland gallery's attic in late 1958.
Pictured with curator Julia Waite (centre) on the opening night are Hocken Collections Head Curator Pictorial Robyn Notman and Art Historian and Art Education Professor David Bell from the University of Otago College of Education. (Photos: Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki)
The exhibition, along with The Wake: A Poem in the Forest, runs at the gallery until 27 January 2020.
