The Tertiary Education Commission's recently released annual Educational Performance Indicators show Otago's continued strong performance.
The University of Otago is again the top-performing university in New Zealand for student academic performance, based on key Government indicators.
Released earlier this month by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), the annual Educational Performance Indicators (EPI) examine course and qualification completion rates, retention rates and progression to higher levels of study for institutions across the tertiary sector in 2023.
Otago ranked first among New Zealand’s eight universities for student qualification completion, first-year retention and progression, and second for course completion.
It also ranked first-equal for Pacific student progression, second for Māori and Pacific student qualification completion, Māori and Pacific student retention and Māori student course completion, and third for Pacific student course completion.

The latest results add to Otago’s strong performance over the past few years, having topped all four measures last year and in 2019, and three out of four in 2021 and 2020.

Otago’s results across the latest TEC performance measures:
- Course completion rate (90 per cent)
- First-year retention rate, from 2022 to 2023 (82 per cent)
- Qualification completion rate (74 per cent)
- Student progression from sub-degree study (97 per cent)
