This week, the University of Otago's Department of Biochemistry is celebrating a significant achievement as Peter Mace marks his promotion to Professor at his Inaugural Professorial Lecture.
Peter Mace, one of New Zealand’s leading molecular structural biologists, leads key research into advancing our understanding of cellular signalling proteins. His work involves determining the precise shapes and structures of proteins through complex techniques such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. By elucidating the exact atomic arrangements within proteins, Peter provides insights into the functions of those proteins within cellular systems, with far-reaching implications for drug design and development.
Peter’s findings have not only been featured in leading scientific journals but have also garnered numerous prestigious grants and awards, including multiple grants from the Health Research Council and Marsden Fund, as well as the University’s Early Career Award for Distinction in Research, the Rowheath Trust Award, the Carl Smith Medal, and the ThermoFisher Scientific™ Award.
He has built an internationally recognised research group at the University. His commitment to both his research and his students—undergraduate and postgraduate alike—is marked by his enthusiasm and dedication. Colleagues and students alike praise his humility and supportive nature, which contribute significantly to the academic environment in the department.
Peter's career has always been closely tied to the University of Otago, completing his undergraduate studies here in Biochemistry in 2002, and staying on to pursue a PhD under the guidance of Associate Professor John Cutfield and postdoctoral work with Professor Catherine Day. After a three-year postdoctoral stint at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in California, he returned to Otago in 2013 to take up a Rutherford Discovery Fellowship.
The Department of Biochemistry, Te Tari Matū Koiora, extends heartfelt congratulations to Professor Peter Mace. His promotion is a testament to his exceptional contributions to the field and his enduring impact on the University community.
Whakamihi nui ki a koe, Peter! We are indeed fortunate to have you as a distinguished member of the Otago family.
