Professor Delahunt has served on the academic staff of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Otago's Wellington campus for more than 40 years.
University of Otago Emeritus Professor of Pathology Brett Delahunt ONZM KStJ FRSNZ has been appointed Foreign Adjunct Professor at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Karolinska is one of the world’s foremost medical universities and is home to the Nobel Assembly, which selects the Nobel Prize winners in physiology or medicine each year.
Appointments to Foreign Adjunct Professor are limited to 12, and Professor Delahunt is the only one from New Zealand.
The appointments are made only to academics who meet the requirements needed to be appointed to a permanent position as full professor at the Karolinska, including being international leaders in their research field.
Professor Delahunt served on the academic staff of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Otago’s Wellington campus for more than 40 years.
Professor Delahunt giving a lecture to senior staff of the Karolinska, part of a week-long series on the pathology of kidney cancers.
His most significant achievements include developing a gold standard grading system for classifying kidney cancers and developing and validating a new grading system for diagnosing prostate cancer.
He has long been involved in research collaborations with academic staff at the Karolinska, particularly with Professor of Tumour Pathology Lars Egevad.
Of the 84 research papers Professor Delahunt has published with authors at the Karolinska, 10 are leading studies assessing the potential for artificial intelligence models to diagnose prostate cancer.
Professor Delahunt is humbled by the appointment.

Professor Delahunt will give an Inaugural Lecture on kidney cancer at the Karolinska Institutet on Wednesday, 13 September.
