The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine hosted medical student Phoebe Wynands over the summer of 2023–24 as part of UOC ’s Future Health Researcher programme, which allows students to gain research experience, work alongside some of the University of Otago’s world class researchers, and explore their career options.
Phoebe worked with our ReClaiM research team, supervised by Associate Professor Deborah Snell. She conducted a review of evidence available guiding screening for traumatic brain injury when this co-occurs with spinal cord injury. Part of Phoebe’s review also evaluated evidence for additional impacts on rehabilitation outcomes when a traumatic brain injury is sustained at the same time as a spinal cord injury.
You can hear from Phoebe all about her review and time with our team and Department, in the video she put together at the conclusion of her scoping review:
Special thanks to Canterbury Orthopaedic Services for sponsoring Phoebe.
