Large disparities in health status are experienced by Pacific children and young people in New Zealand.
Following the Ministry of Health's initial commissioning of a report on the Health of Pacific Children and Young People in New Zealand in 2007, a series of reports have continued to be published that provide a comprehensive overview of Pacific child and youth health across a range of domains including health status, determinants of health including the socioeconomic and cultural determinants of health and chronic conditions and disabilities.
Where possible, the Health of Pacific Children and Young People in New Zealand reports include more detailed breakdowns of data than similar reports written for the District Health Boards, for example, by Pacific ethnic group (Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island Maori, Niue, Tokelauan, Fijian, and other Pacific).
In addition to providing data on selected indicators, the reports include a series of Viewpoints written by Pacific academics and health professionals, who each consider how the health sector might better respond to the health needs of Pacific children and young people.
