Advanced Learning in Medicine (ALM) takes place across three campuses, Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington, which deliver a common curriculum and assessments. Each organises their course to fit their regional healthcare environment so there are variations in how the curriculum is delivered. Most students make their first choice of ALM base for personal reasons, but each site also has unique non-core educational experiences.
Although student preferences are given as much weight as possible, it is sometimes necessary to ballot students to redistribute school allocation. There is an appeal process but students are reminded that accepting final ALM allocation is a condition of acceptance into the programme.
The Medical School advises students about class division early in Year 3, and students are informed of their destination by July-August.
