Medical student Sashika Samaranayaka told those gathered that they have an impact that can last well into the future.
“Not only do they teach us but we also can make career choices based on their teaching too,” she said.
"Not only do they teach us but we also can make career choices based on their teaching too."
Fellow fourth-year Medical student Ben Hoatson said it is important to recognise great teachers because “they are not represented by hospital key performance indicators like the number of patients seen or surgeries carried out, but by their impact in shaping future doctors in the years ahead”.
The aim of the DSM teaching awards for the Advanced Learning in Medicine (ALM) programme is to recognise and celebrate outstanding teaching contributions made by staff in the ALM years of the Medical programme at the DSM and to help raise the profile of teaching in ALM at the DSM.
Some of the awards are based on nominations from fourth- and fifth-year Medical students and this year saw the addition of Departmental awards, nominated by Heads of Department.
In presenting the awards, DSM Dean Professor Barry Taylor said an alternative name for the awards could be “the encouragement of learning awards”.
Professor Taylor said good teaching requires curiosity and enthusiasm but the key attributes of a good teacher are respect and empathy for the students.
