This should be completed by 1 December each year.

Conference funding support

Every PhD student is allocated up to a maximum of NZ$2,000 offered from the Division of Health Sciences.

You may split the funding between more than one conference, if you wish to attend more than one conference during your studies, or use the total amount to attend one international conference.

Conditions of application

  • You must be in your second, or third year of study, or in your fourth year, up to the end of your publishing bursary expiry
  • You must present your research at the conference and a report is required upon returning from the conference

Application documents

Each student is required to complete a report on the conference attended and supply a copy of the abstract from the conference proceedings, within two weeks of returning from the conference by emailing postgrad@otago.ac.nz and Manon Knapen from the Research and Development office.

Other opportunities for funding

Insurance during conferences

You can purchase travel insurance through the University for NZ$4.20 per day. When completing the online application form, please choose personal insurance and you need a credit card and you will be emailed your account.  Please DO NOT use this system and choose business as the School will be charged and this is not acceptable as you have already received your funding.

As you receive your conference money directly to your bank account, you are responsible for payment of ALL your conference expenses including the travel insurance.

International students

Your standard insurance only covers your travel from home destination to Dunedin (return). If you are travelling elsewhere—for example, to a conference—you have to purchase separate travel insurance through the University.

Domestic students

You should also use the online service for purchasing travel insurance.

Visa requirements

International students may require a letter from the School indicating your intentions for travel. Please see the Research Administrator for this letter.
