Philosophy at Otago University has an outstanding reputation for research, in a country known internationally for strength in philosophy. In national rankings in 2003 and 2006, the highest scoring department in New Zealand in any discipline, and second highest in 2012, was the Philosophy programme at the University of Otago. Our research strengths include metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of science, philosophical logic, early modern philosophy, mind, philosophy of language, and metaethics.
The Philosophy programme has a friendly and open atmosphere, with a lively postgraduate community. Staff and postgraduate students regularly socialise together. We also have a steady stream of visitors from overseas to our weekly seminar programme, so students have the chance to meet and hear papers by a wide range of visiting philosophers.
The Philosophy programme offers a range of postgraduate qualifications, from the Diploma for Graduates through to the PhD.
The programme awards a number of prizes to postgraduate students; for information and past prize winners, see here.
Funding is available to postgraduate students for conference travel; the application form is here.
