The Currie prize in philosophy
Established in 1993 by Professor Gregory Currie, BSc PhD(Lond), a staff member of the Department of Philosophy from 1981 to 1993. The prize is awarded to a student who submits an outstanding dissertation in Philosophy at 400-level which is awarded an A+ grade.

The Pavel Tichy prize in logic
Established in 1995 in memory of Pavel Tichy, Professor of Logic from 1970 until 1994.The prize is awarded to an outstanding student in the highest class in Logic, or should no suitable candidate be available in that class, to an outstanding student in the next highest class in Logic.

The J.A. Harvie prize
Established originally in 1987 by donations from students, colleagues and friends of Dr J.A. Harvie who taught within the Department of Russian Language and Literature from 1965 to 1985. The Prize shall be awarded to the student who achieves the highest level of attainment in 200 level papers in Philosophy in any one year.

The James Clark prize in philosophy
In the early 1900’s the late Mrs Clark, widow of the Rev. James Clark of Palmerston, left a legacy of £500 to the Presbyterian Church for the promotion of sound learning in the University of Otago. The James Clark Prize is awarded to to the most distinguished honours student in Philosophy.

The Kerry Thorn memorial prize in philosophy
In 1983 Mr and Mrs J.S. Thorn made a gift to establish a Scholarship in memory of their son Kerry Thorn, whose own studies in the Department of Philosophy were cut short by his tragic death in 1967. The prize is awarded annually to the best student of Philosophy at 300-level or, if there is no suitable student at this level, to the best student of Philosophy at 200-level.

Established in 2004 by Sir John Thorn and family, who made a donation to establish a scholarship in memory of their son Kerry Thorn, whose studies in the Department of Philosophy were cut short by his tragic death in 1967. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student with a high standard of achievement in Philosophy at 300-level who is proceeding to a course of full-time study at 400-level for a degree or postgraduate diploma.

The Macgregor prize
Established in 1958 in memory of Prof. D. MacGregor, Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy from 1870 to 1886. The prize is awarded annually to the student of Philosophy at 200-level whose written essays in that subject are adjudged to be the best.

The Stuart prize
Founded in 1894 by a bequest of £100 under the will of the Rev. D.M. Stuart DD, Chancellor of the University from 1879-1894. The prize is awarded annually in English, Philosophy, or Physics (i.e. triennially to the best student of Philosophy at 100- level Philosophy).
