Overview

A master's level qualification in physiotherapy can be awarded in two ways.

You can choose a research master's by thesis, or a coursework master's by papers.

physio_masters Adina Holder 418 2017Adina Holder recently completed her Masters at the University of Otago's School of Physiotherapy.

She decided to undertake further studies after hearing about it from a colleague.

Adina was interested in the Sports Physiotherapy so chose papers which covered biomechanics, research, anatomy, injury prevention and clinical reasoning.

Masters' pathways

Masters by research (thesis)

The School of Physiotherapy's research master's programme consists of:

  • PHTY 545 or an approved paper worth 30 points

    AND
  • PHTY 610

    AND
  • A thesis (120 points) embodying the results of one year of full-time or equivalent part-time supervised research.

Coursework Master's

The School of Physiotherapy's Coursework Master's consists of:

  • Six approved papers from the schedule to a total value of 180 points
  • Four papers completed as part of the PGDipPhty can also count towards the MPhty by coursework
  • The final two papers are PHTY 610 and PHTY 650

Physiotherapists must registered with the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand and possess an Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
