In recent times, New Zealand's relations with the Gulf states and the Middle East in general have been an understudied area, despite the region's strategic significance. When taken as a whole, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is New Zealand's seventh-largest trading partner. Moreover, the Gulf effectively serves as New Zealand's gateway to the wider Middle East, a region that has also been the focus of numerous New Zealand military deployments.

This research explores the determinants and constraints of New Zealand's relationship with the GCC and its six member states: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
