Are you interested in improving the outcomes of tenants living in public housing?

We have funding for an enthusiastic master's student to build on the excellent research being conducted by the NZ Centre of Sustainable Cities at Otago University, Wellington.

This scholarship is supported through the MBIE Endeavour Programme, Public Housing and Urban Regeneration: Maximising Wellbeing.

Our research examines and compare six public housing organisations’ arrangements for how they design and deliver housing and urban regeneration projects to optimise tenant and community wellbeing and advance environmental sustainability outcomes. This research could have a major impact on future housing and urban design policy.

About this research project

Public housing providers are interested in engaging tenants in governance but are unsure what format that might take. Tenants have established their own ways of engaging in public housing, which don’t always fit into the expectations of the governance board.

How and why might tenants engage in public housing governance? What can international experiences tell us about this? This will be one of the first studies to examine the voice of tenants in public housing governance and the future form this might take.

The project will build on existing research undertaken with public housing providers by the housing research group and utilise qualitative research method to explore the area further.

Suitable applicants will receive full funding, including $20,000 stipend (plus fees) paid over 12 months.

To be eligible you must have completed or in the process of completing the DPH including, including PUBH 724: Intro to Qualitative Methods. Applicants will need to have a strong academic record and high motivation.
