Overview
Wapouri / Mount Horrible.
Wapouri / Mount Horrible, inland of Timaru, is the site of the youngest episode of volcanism in South Island at approximately 2 Ma (the Timaru basalt).
The eruption occurred as a single event, producing an extensive lava field, after which activity ceased. This one-time shot is an uncommon characteristic of volcanic systems, and is therefore an intriguing opportunity to investigate and understand magma generation, processing and ascent dynamics.
The project will focus on collecting a suite of samples from the Timaru basalt for rock geochemical and microchemical mineral analysis.
Results will be modelled to evaluate intensive parameters of magma genesis and evolution through thermobarometry, diffusion modelling etc.
