Overview
The University of Otago and AgResearch are seeking to build Māori researcher capability in animal welfare studies. This project has an emphasis on Māori-led and kaupapa Māori research to explore Māori approaches to the care and use of animals, particularly in farming. This is with the goal of facilitating incorporation of more Māori-centred approaches to animal welfare in animal care and production.
We are seeking a graduate with an interest or experience in Māori-led and/or kaupapa Māori research. The research may include literature review, qualitative enquiry and qualitative analysis (e.g. interviewing Māori participants and analysing that data).
The Master's candidate will have their domestic study fees and research costs funded. Suitable candidates may also be supported to apply for a University of Otago Master's Scholarship.
This Master's is suited to applicants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, but an interest in, and ideally experience with, Māori-centred and/or kaupapa Māori research and ethics in research is preferable. Candidates ideally will be interested in developing other disciplinary skills as part of the Master's.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A postgraduate qualification (e.g. PGDip, Honours) in Māori studies, social science, philosophy, health science, or other suitable discipline or subject – if in doubt contact us to discuss
- An interest, or ideally experience, in areas aligned with the study of animal welfare, farming or other animal uses
- Knowledge of, or interest in, working with Māori communities
- Knowledge of, or experience with, kaupapa Māori, Māori-centred values-based research with Māori communities.
