Wellington is a great place for a holiday, whether for a weekend or two weeks. The city has energy, as the home of many of New Zealand's cultural institutions, and a wonderful location on high hills around a dramatic harbour.

In this guide to Wellington and its immediate environment, Gavin McLean gives a potted history and describes walks and trips that can be taken by visitors, many by public transport. There are four inner-city walks (including the cable car and botanical gardens, parliament, Lambton Quay and party places), trips to local highlights (the waterfront, south coast drive, Matiu/Somes Island, eastern bays), and visits to museums, galleries and historic places, as well as natural reserves such as the Karori Sanctuary. It's all here for a great holiday.
