Emily Mason wasn't sure what she wanted to do when she started at Otago.
After two years majoring in Psychology and Human Nutrition she dropped Nutrition for Commerce – although she still didn't know which direction she'd take.
But the more she learned about Finance, the more she enjoyed it. In her fourth year she was part of the Business School's team that travelled to Queenstown and Singapore for Business Case competitions.
“I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in business,” says Emily.
“Presenting ideas to successful businessmen and women on judging panels shows them what you can do — how you can speak, act under pressure and answer questions on the spot.”
“It was a fantastic opportunity and brilliant real life experience, and although we worked hard during competitions, it wasn't an onerous time commitment. We were all very social people who made the most out of student life.”
Before Emily graduated with a BCom in Finance and a BSc in Psychology she applied for internships but ended up taking a job offer as an analyst with Goldman Sachs in Auckland.
After a week's training in Sydney and a few months on the job she joined other graduate trainees from around the world for six weeks training in New York.
“It was incredible, just the best experience, great training and the opportunity to meet and mix with all your colleagues from around the world.”
So as a successful graduate who once didn't know what the future held, Emily is happy to offer advice to new students.
“Don't be concerned about the long term. Anything you study is going to be beneficial. Choose a selection of things and don't be stressed about the end result. Enjoy the journey and make the most of it.”
“At the end of the day that's what it's all about — meeting people, gaining new skills, and having good experiences.”
